Sylvie Vartan et Johnny Hallyday photographiés par Jean-Marie Périer à Rio de Janeiro, 1969

In January 1969, Johnny and Sylvie set off on another trip to Brazil strictly as tourists. They were however accompanied by their friend Jean-Marie Périer, photographer from "Salut les Copains" and the photos of their holiday in Rio make it round the world...

SYLVIE VARTAN AND JOHNNY HALLYDAY ON HOLIDAY IN RIO

At least for a few days, Sylvie Vartan wants to forget that she's a famous star of music and of French television, and make the most of her holiday in Rio, alongside her husband, the no-less-famous Johnny Hallyday, and several of her friends, like a schoolgirl, getting her own way, without a timetable to stick to, without the stress of photographers and journalists. That's why it's not easy to interview Johnny and Sylvie. Upon their arrival at the airport, they said a few words and again yesterday, they were ready to respond to the journalists' questions. But they warned us: right now they want total rest, without anyone harassing them with questions, without anyone reminding them that very soon they'll have to start working again. And she wants to tan. Sylvie can think of nothing other than turning her skin the same colour as the Cariocas. Waking up yesterday, she looked out of her window, she saw it was sunny and without loosing any time she slipped on a little blue bikini and called Johnny, who wanted to carry on sleeping. So she ran off alone to the beach. Like a schoolgirl on holiday, her hair tied up in a ponytail, her skin all white, she crossed the beach incognito. Her pleasure, however, was short lived.

Soon her friends arrived - the photographer Jean-Marie Périer, the secretary Marianne and the architect Alain Demachy - which immediately drew a mob of photographers, cameramen and reporters. Her face suddenly closed up, she responded quickly to the first questions that she was on holiday and she didn't want to talk about work, or answer the telephone. In his turn, Johnny gave practically the same answer to the journalists. Every day he sleeps in his room until late morning. So when the telephone rings, his response is always the same: "No interviews." As for the possibility of him performing onstage, the singer is even more formal. He came to Brazil as a tourist and intends to stay one. The couple are staying in Rio only until next Friday, then go to Salvador de Bahia until the 21st,  when they fly back to Paris. During their stay in Rio, Johnny, Sylvie and their friends eat lunch and dinner every day in the restaurant and try to discover as many nightclubs and hotspots as possible, guided by friends who live in Rio de Janeiro. The journey to Salvador will be done with the advice of Pierre Barouh et Guy de Casteja. "Then it'll be back to Paris where a heap of work is waiting for us" says Johnny….

CONTIGO - Sylvie, do you promise to tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth to the readers of Contigo?

SYLVIE - I promise.

CONTIGO- First of all, how's it all going?

SYLVIE – : Better than ever. My last show at the Olympia was lauded by the critics. My latest records are in the charts all over the place in Europe. The fashion that I design for young people is doing particularly well. I've even opened new shops in Germany, Switzerland, Finland and Belgium. And most important for me, my husband, Johnny and my son David are also very well.

CONTIGO– Like all famous artists, you must have many engagements to honour, and so not much time for your son. How do you get around that?

SYLVIE – It's not all that difficult. In Europe, the busiest time for an artist is the summer, which lasts exactly three months. In this season, the demand is effectively quite high. But the rest of the year, that is to say most of the time, I try to spend as much time with him as possible.

CONTIGO– And is it worth spending three months far from your child every year?

SYLVIE – Certainly. To have a good career is a marvellous thing. What's more, I think that to be capable of bringing up a child, it's essential to be happy and to feel fulfilled. And to do that, I need to work.

CONTIGO– Do you intend to have other children?

SYLVIE – Later, yes. Johnny and I want two other boys so that David doesn't feel abandoned when we travel.

CONTIGO– And as for your fashion collections, what can you tell us?

SYLVIE – Well, I think that it's working very well. The Sylvie Vartan creations started strongly everywhere they were introduced. I'm even thinking about opening a shop in São Paulo. Young girls, in particular, liked the designs I presented at the eleventh FENIT.

CONTIGO– Are you going to continue in designing fashion for young people? Even in a few years?

SYLVIE – Yes. And I design each piece as though it were for myself you know. So I think that in ten years or more, I will turn towards a fashion designed for more mature ladies. But always in simplicity, without too much sophistication, with the constant aim of rejuvenating women.

CONTIGO– And cinema, Sylvie? Have you given up on it?

SYLVIE–Not really. After "Patate", I haven't had any other propositions. In my country, it's particulary hard to be at the same time a singer and an actor. The directors are afraid of singers. But I don't ask too much. French cinema is in a bad phase, English and Italian cinema is doing better.

CONTIGO– If you had to film, which director would you like to work with?

SYLVIE – : Uh… I don't know. Maybe Terence Stamp. He's so cool...

CONTIGO– Of everything you've seen in Brazil, what have you liked the best?

SYLVIE – The colours. Everything is so colourful. ... Oh, I also really liked the songs of Gilberto Gil. I plan to record at least two of them in France.

CONTIGO– These days, certain composers say they want to create not only a new musical style but also a new way of thinking? What's your feeling?

SYLVIE – I think that songs are made mainly to distract. Wanting to change people's way of thinking is very ambitious.

CONTIGO— What has made you suffer the most since you started singing?

SYLVIE – People with hidden agendas. It took me a while to learn to demask them but at the moment I manage

CONTIGO– What's your definition of happiness?

SYLVIE – Doing everything that you want to do.

CONTIGO– Are you happy?

SYLVIE – Yes. I do everything that I want to.

CONTIGO– Like what for example?

SYLVIE – Sing, look after my son, give shows on stage or on television, go for walks in the woods

CONTIGO– Do you promise that you have told the whole truth and nothing but the truth to the readers of CONTIGO?

SYLVIE - Yes, I promise.
