Just like an episode of Tintin

When discussing the career of Sylvie Vartan, we felt the need to devote a special chapter to Japan. The story began in the early 60s ... At that time, even more than today, the country seemed like a different world, with its own aesthetic codes. The culture developed parallel to the west without ever truly joining it, despite coming close on a few occasions.

Being propelled to musical stardom at only 18 in her own country was already a rare privilege, but experiencing the same fate on the other side of the planet, antipode of the west both by geography and culture, was not just a stroke of luck, especially at a time when the concept of globalization hadn't even been imagined yet.

We wanted to retrace the steps of "Sylvie Vartan in Japan", that she herself described as feeling just like an episode of Tintin, so that you might relive it with her... With the help of all the documents we could find across France, Japan and the rest of the world, we have put together this jigsaw puzzle journey which, although many pieces are missing, gives an intriguing insight into Sylvie's adventures.

The career of Sylvie Vartan in Japan spans six decades, starting with the movie "Cherchez l'idole" and the success of the song "La plus belle pour aller danser" turning into a societal phenomenon.  Here are the main stages of this incredible career...

Early records

Some biographers make the story begin with the success of "La plus belle pour aller danser"  in 1965. The 1963-64 years are rarely evocated and we could even think that Sylvie Vartan's career in Japan was due to a "lucky song". The reading of the article "How to succeed in Japan" written by Wolfgang Arming, an actor of the Japanese star system, offers quite different Sylvie Vartan et les Beatles presse japonaiseperspectives ...It appears that French and Japanese RCA Victor's teams planned the launch of Sylvie Vartan's career in the archipelago as far back as 1963, putting the odds on her side.

French culture had already its place in Japan. It was represented by movies and « rive gauche » songs, both carrying their share of romantic and sophisticated images whereas modernity was limited to "New Wave" films. In all cases, this was very far from the world of rock and pop ...In 1963, the Beatles success took the world by surprise and it affected Japan as well. Record companies started to look at their French pop yéyés catalog more closely. Thus in 1963 the first few records of Françoise Hardy and Sylvie Vartan were made in Japan, soon followed by France Gall, Adamo and other singers...Then for Sylvie Vartan, RCA launched no less than 3 singles , 1 EP and 2 LP on the Japanese market from December 1963 to October 1964. Then the first articles about Sylvie appeared regularly in the press.

We have no idea on how successful those records really were, but we can find some indications ; firstly, we often nowadays find those records on auction sites, and then the launch of the movie "Look for the idol" relied mainly on the song’s and Sylvie Vartan’s image. Therefore we can assume her name was big enough to promote the movie. Directed by Michel Boisrond  "Cherchez l'idole" can be seen as a manifesto of the budding Yéyé Stars. Each idol was given the opportunity to sing special material written by Charles Aznavour and Georges Garvarentz.

This quaint film will turn the spark into fire....

The 21 November 1964, the film "Cherchez l'idole"  was released in Japan and it was the short appearance of Sylvie that captivated the public. The song "La plus belle pour aller danser" written by Charles Aznavour and Georges Garvarentz saw considerable success.

As for the film it ended up 20th in the "Box Office" at the end of 1965. The song entered the chart "95 million inhabitants"  November 19 1964 in 16th place and by the 17 December it was number 1 ahead of The Beatles.

Its success surpassed all expectations, particularly clear when, two months after its release,

the single was the  N°1 bestseller.

Its progress in the Tokushin charts was rapid, appearing in the top 20 in 5th place before

taking 1st place in the chart for 5 weeks. It remained in the top 10 for more than 3 months.

For a foreign artist such success is very rare in Japan.

Rond noir  "La plus belle pour aller danser" is the bestselling French song in the history of Japan...

Rond noir  In January 1966 in their annual statement, Tokushin ranked "La plus belle pour aller danser" third best selling single of 1965 with nearly a million sales (Other foreign artists ranked: The  Beatles 6th with "Rock'n roll music", France Gall 9th with  "Poupée de cire, poupée de son")

Rond noir  In 1971, when Sylvie Vartan's single "La plus belle pour aller danser"  went out of production by RCA it had sold 1.2 million copies and with the reeditions of the 70s it would have reached 1.5 million. It's without a doubt Sylvie Vartan's biggest success, culturally and commercially.

Rond noir Sylvie Vartan is one of four foreign artists to rank N°1 in Japan in the 60s (with Elvis Presley, the Bee Gees and Simon & Garfunkel).

40 years later the television programme "Song to soul"  (in which each edition retraced the history of a song that left a profound mark on Japan) dedicated an episode to "La plus belle pour aller danser" to try and get to the heart of the reasons for such a success.

It was suggested that its success lay in the blend of the "left bank" spirit (brought by Charles Aznavour) with the "Pop Phenomenon" incarnated by Sylvie Vartan . Although a ye-ye icon, Sylvie Vartan possessed all the qualities that the Japanese expected from the French, elegance and sophistication of course...

Since the 60s the term "idole" (see "history" chapter) passed into common usage in Japanese to mean young singers that become a star overnight.

An amusing fact: most Japanese people probably haven't heard of the song "La plus belle pour aller danser", try asking them about "Cherchez l'idole" as that's its title in Japanese!

Waiting for Sylvie

シルヴィの到着前

One year before "La plus belle pour aller danser", articles about Sylvie started to appear in the press, allowing the public to get used to her face. From 1964 on whole front pages were dedicated to her.

Sylvie Vartan couvertures presse japonaise 1964-65

Suddenly her picture was everywhere, featuring on all kinds of record covers, even if she was not the singer recorded, in what witnesses of the time describe as "Sylvie mania".

Her Japanese fans were kept up to date with everything she did, her trip to the USA and of course her marriage to Johnny Hallyday, the other star of "Cherchez l'idole".

More importantly her Japanese tour was announced…

In 1965 Sylvie Vartan began her first world tour that would take her from Turkey to the US and Canada, then to Japan via South America before returning to France for a traditional winter tour.Sylvie Vartan "Le Parisien" 1964 article "Une Geisha nommée Sylvie"

In France too interest grew about this world tour and the star's schedule impressed the journalist Yves Salgues in an interview before she left ("Jours de France" March 6, 1965). He counted up 185,000 kilometers of travel, and hinted at Sylvie’s fees (rivaling those of Brigitte Bardot), her television shows in the US, the prospect of a film and a likely marriage to Johnny Hallyday, the No.°1 French singer of his generation.

Yves Salgues, full of goodwill but also prejudices, was surprised by such ambitions in a twenty year old girl, and he would never have imagined just how involved Sylvie was in putting together this tour, as we shall see in the next chapter.

She posed as a Geisha, a nod to her french audience... Photos were published in Paris-Match, France Soir... This was still the cliché world of the 1960s...

Before leaving France, she paid a visit to one of the (then rare) Japanese restaurants in Paris to take a few photos for her japanese fans.

First steps in Japan

日本で初めて

Sylvie Vartan mitraillée par les photographes à l'aéroport de Tokyo- Haneda, 7 mai 1965On May 7th at 7:20 pm, after a 20 hour flight in the legendary Boeing 707 stopping in Moscow and Anchorage, Sylvie landed at Tokyo-Haneda Airport, Japan. Thousands of students and schoolchildren in their uniform greeted her with uninhibited  enthusiasm. She was led directly to the airport hall for a press conference. Rarely do we see photos of her so radiant in the face of the press; indeed, the warm welcome she received was a sign of good things to come...

The Sylvie that arrived in Japan had more than one side to her personality.

A 20 year old girl chaperoned by her brother Eddie and friend Carlos ; a young singer come to maintain her position amongst high public expectations that could have paralyzed any number of more experienced artists; an ambassador of French elegance who featured on adverts for  Dior, but also a businesswoman set to present her own  Prêt-à-porter collection.

Last but not least, "Sylvie the Star" was to become a model for photographer Jean-Marie Périer, starring in one of his most stunning publications for the french teen magazine "Salut les copains" (chapter :  "Photo gallery")

Aside from stage and song, Sylvie premiered her first Prêt-à-porter collection (6 months before its Paris release). A catwalk show was organized in Tokyo at Seibu's. She also shot two TV commercials for the famous sportswear brand "Renown". How long had this been planned?  Styling, fitting, selection of  the models... Everything without French fans suspecting a thing. That has to be proof (if any more were needed) of just how important this trip was...

In the early 1960s it was still very rare in Japan to use a western artist to promote a consumer brand. Sylvie Vartan was one of the first celebrities onto who the japanese projected their dreams of independence and modernity.

Looking back on 1965, a witness of the time talked recently about a "Vartan craze" overwhelming Japan.

When reading such an account, you wonder if Sylvie herself realized the passion she inspired... On her return to France, when asked about what most surprised her during her trip, she replied, with characteristic detachment: "The Sumos and my success".

In Tokyo she visited a Sumo School (Heya)  where she met for  the first time  two  big  names  of the    sport,  Daigo Wakamisugi (若三杉 彰晃) and Wakachichibu Komei (若秩父 高明). Both impressed her greatly. Not one to be shy, it wasn't long before Sylvie was climbing all over them.

nces a night before leaving for Osaka, Nagoya, Kobe, returning once more to Tokyo. In Osaka she made two appearances in the enormous Festival Hall. She would return there often. Most of the time Sylvie sang in recently opened venues, of between 2000 and 3000 seats, ultra-modern, that made such an impact on her that 10 years later in Paris as soon as she saw the Japanese style hall of the Palais des Congrès she wanted to perform there. In Tokyo she sang in the Sankei  Hall and in the Kosei Nenkin Kaikan Large Hall. In the evenings, once the show was finished, she was booked for the most selective nightclubs of the city. At the Prince Hotel in Tokyo where she was staying, she sang in the Blue Gardenia, a privilege that she shared with such big names as Dionne Warwick and Tony Bennett. Situated on a terrace of the Prince Hotel with its panoramic view, it offered, according to tourist guide books, Tokyo's most beautiful view of the mount Fuji-Yama... Who knows if the song "Je croyais" may have been an echo of this stunning image..

Sylvie Vartan Japan Tour 1965

A valuable report...

Sylvie vartan sur scène au Japon en 1965, un compte-rendu précieux, témoignage d'une fan japonaise 40 ans après....

"At that time, we were living a Vartan craze. At Seibu's, they opened  a corner to sell some of her collection . I remember a chiffon dress to die for, I was crazy about it and went to see it as often as I could. The day of the concert she entered the stage in a flowing light blue dress. She was so pretty, with her pale blond hair, in her gently waving dress the color of the ocean and her tender husky voice... it was a surreal image. During the second part of the show she brought onto stage some students in their uniform. They danced with her and I saw her real, warmer personality. Time went by too quickly. The press at the time reported that she had just got married to Johnny Hallyday and would return to Japan right after her honeymoon. Since then she has often come back to Japan and will be here again in the spring. I never went to see her again, to preserve the enchantment of that evening".

Taking advantage of Sylvie's popularity, the movie "D’où viens-tu Johnny" opened in the theatre, with an almost identical poster to "Chercher l’Idole", but it didn't meet with the same success.

A glance at the charts from the time shows that all records released in the wake of this tour were successful. Sylvie was expected to return the following year, but in 1966 she had higher priorities than her career...

Sylvie Vartan dans la presse japonaise : avec la fille de Pascal Audret
Japanese press : Sylvie with Pascale Audret's daughter

As a result her return was scheduled for 1968 as part of a new international tour. Unfortunately the day after her 1968 Musicorama 68 comeback in Paris she was involved in a serious car accident that killed her closest friend Mercedes. The tour was cancelled. Postponing the tour over and over again had an impact on her popularity in Japan. Times were changing and the Yeyes were going out of fashion. In Japan, just like in France, the public had started to turn towards British pop music. In 1967, her single "2'35  de  bonheur" rose to # 3 at the All Japan 20, but following singles never made it to the charts.

Despite this Sylvie kept a strong fan base and the press never stopped reporting on her activities, particularly in the fashion business. Clips recorded in Paris specifically for Japan were shown on television, along with her TV show "Jolie poupée" under the title "La fée de Paris" (A title that would later become a kind of nickname).

The story could have ended there, three years of success before fading away like everyone else... However Sylvie Vartan 's love affaire with Japan was far from over. In 1971 she would be back with a new image, new style and new show to reclaim her crown...

1970-1971: New Start

新たな刺激

Sylvie Vartan au Japon, 1971, jardin japonais

Six years had passed since Sylvie Vartan last visited Japan. During those years the Japanese music scene had changed completely. Japanese "Star Academies" created many "idols", aimed at young girls, based on the model of the "yeye girls", as well as boy bands in the image of The BeatlesThe Tigers, The Spiders, The Tempters, to name a few. 1966 saw the end of the Yeye era. Outside of the English-speaking world, only Gigliola Cinquetti and Adamo ("Inch Allah") were still going strong. From 1969, Vicky Leandros, using mostly French lyrics, made the charts for three years of success, whilst Daniele Vidal, a French girl, profited from the void left by other French singers to establish a career. However these successes couldn't mask the increasing presence of US acts in the Japanese charts, and the lasting presence of English Pop.

In 1970, Sylvie was no longer competing with just her European counterparts, but also with American singers Janis JoplinCarly Simon, Joni Mitchell, Carole King...

As we have already seen, large disk sales are usually the key to convincing tour promoters to take on an artist, and for a successful comeback Sylvie needed a big hit. Her latest success,"2’35 de bonheur", dated back to 1967.

Her single "Les hommes qui n'ont plus rien à perdre" was released on July 1970. In France, she never promoted the single on TV or on stage, this may explain why this was a soon forgotten hit. Nothing could foresee its success in Japan, except perhaps the "Macaroni Western" movie trend. The song quickly ranked first among the most influential hit parades and made the top 10 sales charts. At the end of the year "Irrésistiblement" took the same path. When first released as a single in 1968, it was only a minor success. Later, it gained new exposure as an instrumental by Paul Mauriat. The melody was popular enough for RCA  to re-release "Irrésistiblement" with a new sleeve. At that time, in the charts, "Les hommes qui n'ont plus rien à perdre" was bigger than "Irrésistiblement", but over time, "Irrésistiblement" became Sylvie's second biggest hit in Japan (so often used for publicity), the unbeatable "La plus belle pour aller danser" remaining first.

We have no details of the release strategy for Sylvie Vartan's 1971 comeback in Japan, but all photos used at the time showed Sylvie in her glorious Yeye period of the early to mid 1960s.

1971 Tour

________________

Arrivée de Sylvie Vartan à l'aéroport de Tokyo Haneda, mai 1971

Sylvie Vartan arrived in Tokyo in May 1971, with her dear friend Carlos. This would be their last tour together. RCA had organized a press conference in the New Otani Hotel, to present the tour as well her new live album "In Person" ("Sylvie à l'Olympia"). There, she was presented with three gold records for sales of 1 million records over a one year period…(The singles  "Les hommes qui n'ont plus rien à perdre" and "Irrésistiblement", as well as an LP (probably a Best of album).

Arrivée de Sylvie Vartan à Tokyo-Haneda, conférence de presse, mai 1971 Sylvie Vartan remise de trois disques d'or par RCA VICTOR au Japon en 1971

Her tour started in the same way as every tour in the 70s: meeting with the press, radio interviews in each city, appearances on major television programs in Tokyo as well as others in outlying cities. And of course concerts, sometimes broadcasted simultaneously on the radio and perhaps even on TV.

While touring Japan, her leading single was "Aime-moi", another big success in the charts ...It was a busy period in terms of releases, with three "Best Of" packages, as well as an LP box-set and her live "Olympia 70" LP renamed "In person".

On May 22, a two day break allowed Sylvie to get in the studio and record several songs in Japanese, including the famous"Kobito Jidai" to be released at the end of the year. She participated in several television shows. Clips were re-broadcasted on NHK in 2001, in the show "Nostalgia for the French Pop". It shows Sylvie singing "Aime-moi" and "La Maritza" in the gardens of the hotel Otani.

In addition to her evening performances, she appeared  for the first time in Tokyo's most exclusive nightclubs. The "Copacabana" and "Golden Getsusekai" (The Golden Moon), were the only two in the capital that could afford high-priced top acts. When the curtain rose, she was like an image out of "Goldfinger", glittering in the lights. At the Copa she chose her velvet mini-dress but at the "Golden Moon", she was clad in Yves Saint Laurent gold.

Another cherished ritual stop for Sylvie was the sumo school. During this tour, in his gorilla getup, Carlos was a sensation every night,  reading out Japanese product names of detergents, pet foods and shampoos that he'd learned by ear... Laughter always ensued... ("Je m'appelle Carlos", Editions Ramsay). The tour book, beside his biography, featured a detailed report of his height, weight and even blood type.

Sylvie left the country with a smile on her face: her return to Japan was a triumph. She had performed for more than 30,000 spectators and every single released between 1970 and 1971 ranked in the charts (those already mentioned here as well as a re-release of "La Maritza" in june and "Kobito jidai" at the end of the year). An album"Sylvie à Tokyo" was recorded live on the last day of the tour. This was her first double LP with what was at the time her longest set list, and the only one to feature her covers of "Me and Bob McGee" and "Get back". The show took the same set as Olympia 70 but included "Annabel" several months before it was released in France and "Apprends-moi", flip side of the Japanese single  "Abracadabra"that wasn't released until December 1971. All this was evidence of the Japanese re-marketing of the set list that took place after discussion with RCA Japan. This time, they weren't about to wait six years for the next tour. Their return was scheduled for the following spring.

When Sylvie stepped off her plane in Tokyo on May 8th, a year had elapsed since she last visited Japan. You could say this tour was an extension of the previous one.

1971 was a very successful year with a huge presence on Japanese TV and in the press, helping to build her new image, a far cry from the "doll face, blond hair yeye queen image" that had become synonymous with her persona. In 1971, she had become a kind of hippie queen, pale, long blond hair, short dressed, moving to a folk look in 1972. For women’s magazines she incarnated the "beauty, sensuality, and fantasy of the French woman".  She was featured heavily in fashion pages, especially in a revealing portrait  by the famous Japanese photographer Hajime Sawatari (an・an - First "Elle" issue in Japan).

In France the teen music media reacted. "Hit magazine" commissioned  its best photographer Tony Frank for the job, while "Salut les copains"rushed to send Jean-Marie Périer to cover the tour. This was to be his last photoshoot with Sylvie, marking the end of an era.

 New image

Only in 1972 did RCA decide to promote Sylvie's records with her new image.

"Abracadra" was released in late 1971 or early 1972. According to the reverse side, radio listeners leaped on this song and everyone expected  the release to be a big hit, but in the end, beyond radio its success was limited.

 "Caro Mozart"
was her main hit single of 1972.  This was more than just luck, with Raymond Lefevre having just seen great success with an adaptation of Mozart's 40th symphony. It was probably this that led RCA to risk a second single in Italian (Zum Zum Zum was first). This was a huge success for Sylvie who didn't expect the song to appear in the program for  this tour.

• "Riche" went more or less unnoticed...

"La gioventu" was a fair success, along with the original version, "How do you do", that appeared on the reverse side .

• "C'était la belle vie" : The original version by Cher ("Gipsy tramps and thieves") had been a top 20 hit in 1971. Sylvie’s cover was released in 1973, with reasonable success.

• "Sympathie": The LP was released  April 25th, a week before the start of the tour. Carried by the success of the lead single "Caro Mozart" it rose to #23 on the Oricon LP chart and is one of her best selling original LPs in Japan.

Her three first LPs along with her "Live in Tokyo" LP were reissued with new sleeves and  several "Best of" compilations were also released. (See the chart positions of Sylvie Vartan in the 1972 Japanese hit parades)

"During the tour, Sylvie was joined by Johnny Hallyday and Jean Pons (their manager). Sylvie finished filming of the movie "Malpertuis" directed by Harry Kumel. This adaptation of Jean Ray's wonderful story also features Orson Welles and Susan Hampshire. Sylvie plays a young cabaret singer who leads the hero Mathieu Carrière into a violent fight. The story takes place in Ghent and Bruges in the middle of the 19th century. We hope to see the movie soon in Japan. This year, Sylvie is getting ready for a musical in Paris "Alice in wonderland" (from Lewis Carol). Gilles Thibault is the author in collaboration with  Tommy Brown and Eddie Vartan".

18 spectacles : The 1972 tour was bigger than that of the previous year with 18 concerts (7 more than in 1971). 5 of these took place in Tokyo, where she then sang at the Golden Getsussekai night club for the rest of the evening.

50 000 fans :  The tour drew 50.000 fans and made the box-office top 10 for international artists.

De nouvelles chansons The tour seemed to have the same set list as in 1971 with "C'est bon de vous voir", "Abracadabra","Mon singe et moi" and the hits "Les hommes qui n'ont plus rien à perdre", "Irrésistiblement", "La plus belle pour aller danser", "La Maritza" ... Sylvie also sang a few "oldies", "Deux mains",  "Caro Mozart" (a late addition), and two previews  "L'heure la plus douce de la vie" and  "C'était la belle vie"

Herbert Léornard : Sylvie helped out Herbert Leonard who was in a difficult place in his career in France, taking him on tour with her (and once again a few years later when he appears at the  Tokyo International Festival of Tokyo).

Costumes Yves Saint Laurent The pictures show Sylvie wearing the same outfits as in 1971 plus a new black sequined jumpsuit that she would rarely wear in France. Her backing singers and musicians have swapped their mini shorts and heart printed T-shirts for (then futuristic) white jumpsuits.

 A True Star

Article Sylvie Vartan presse japonaise page 1, 1972   Article Sylvie Vartan presse japonaise page 2, 1972

"Suddenly, in the darkened room, a spotlight appears on the singer. She shakes her blond hair before running non stop through the songs at a steady pace. Sylvie Vartan! The melodies are the same color as her emotions: red for passion, yellow for pop, blue for melancholy. She was never considered the best of singers and yet, for 10 years, Sylvie maintained her status as a true star. Her charm, her mysterious aura and an infallible sense of theatre are responsable. In the first half of the 1960s, rock'n roll made its appearance in the world of the "chanson française" with the Yeyes. It was in this new genre that Sylvie became a leading name and conquered the hearts of the young Parisians. Her success grew from national to global. In the meantime she met Johnny Hallyday and they shot several films together (D’où viens-tu Johnny and Cherchez l’idole), then Olympia opened to her the doors of glory. After time her meeting with Johnny Hallyday ended  with a marriage, a  child and such dramas as their recent separation. After her 1972 concerts in Japan, Sylvie reappeared on stage in autumn (with Olympia). Even though she was going through a difficult time in her private life, Sylvie didn't let anything show off stage... the show must go on! Sylvie Vartan is 28, born in Bulgaria in august 1944 to a French father and a Hungarian mother. The family emigrated to France when she was 10. She quit school at 16 to become a singer. Johnny Hallyday, also born to foreign parents, was the one who brought rock to France in a new style: the Yeye. It's in this musical atmosphere that their love was born. In 1972, Sylvie obtained two hits in Japan: Caro Mozart and La Gioventù. Ironically the film Johnny on stage in which she stars is currently out in cinemas (J'ai tout donné). Now it's time for Sylvie to find love again".    Movie Pictorial

Sylvie in Kyoto

After starring in the film "Malpertuis" alongside Orson Wells and Susan Hampshire, the Yeye Diva just did a tour from Tokyo to Osaka and Kyoto, via the provincial towns. After 18 shows of singing and dancing with passion, she has returned to France to meet Terence Young, whose film "Soleil Rouge" is currently showing. Sylvie, for whom this was her third visit to Japan, now knows the whole country quite well, but her favorite city is still Kyoto. There she went to visit the Nijo castle and to taste the famous "imobu" of Gion.  She went there with a journalist from the culinary guide Kem. She came across a group of high school students who were visiting the Heian sanctuary, and they took a photo together. The artist, now celebrating 10 years of her career, is a model of calm and dignity.

In the spring of 1972 the two biggest youth magazines, 'Salut les copains' and 'Hit Magazine' were at war with one another, each one covering Sylvie Vartan's Japan tour - and they made it known...

to the end of his fourth year) who leads with equal

success both his studies and the direction of the 'Club'

The lucky winner of the HIT magazine contest will get to accompany Sylvie Vartan on her Japanese tour.

Soon to appear in Hit Magazine, this exceptional report

Jean-Marie Périer (Salut les copains)

Sylvie's first 24 hours in Japan.

At SLC, we give you these photos of Sylvie in Japan before she even returns from this whirlwind journey. To make this possible, Sylvie accepted, right from her arrival, to pose for Jean-Marie Périer. Here, in images, h er first day in Japan.

1) 10:00 am - The plane landed at 8:15am. Sylvie just had time to pass by her hotel an freshen up. For her first Japan photo, she decided to pose in front of the most beautiful Buddhist temple in Tokyo. The change of scenery was striking...

2) 11:00 am - In this Japanese hustle and bustle, and after a tiring Journey, Sylvie felt a little stunned. She wasn't even up to rummaging though the gadget shops that she loves and preferred to rest a minute or two between shoots. But here everything is on show.

3-5 ) 1:00 pm - It was Sylvie who suggested to Jean-Marie this photoshoot in the garden of the hotel Nuotami (Hotani). It was very calm and the posing wasn't too tiring. And never mind about the (illegible) sign forbidding walking on the lawns.

4) 3:00 pm - In front of the entrance of the Great Bazaar of Tokyp, here's the traditional photo with the schoolchildren in their uniforms. All the little girls wanted Sylvie to carry on the rest of her visit of the city in their bus.

6) 11:00 pm - The main reason for Sylvie's visit to Japan was to sing, and she set aside the rest of the afternoon for rehearsals. Now it was show time. Despite the lack of sleep, she gave everything and pulled off an excellent performance in front of three thousand crazed fans.

7) 1:00 am - This time, Sylvie crumbled. Backstage some fans offered her a cup of tea. The next day Sylvie would be completely recovered and in top condition launched into the 10 appearances that awaited her before here departure to the United States.

8-9)  Portraits by Jean-Marie Périer.

Tony Frank (Hit Magazine)

 (Comments from the competition winner)

1) After the photos taken en route, now it was time for the portrait shoot. Sylvie kindly agreed to pose for me in front of the door of a temple in Osaka. Tony, always on the look out for good shots, made the most of the occasion and photographed the scene.

2) The first photo I took during my stay. The day of our arrival, in the middle of a garden in Kyoto, Sylvie with the students from a local school. When they recognised Sylvie they all leapt towards her to get her autograph.

3)  Here we're in Kyoto. Sylvie, same as every day, went shopping with Mimi, Carlos' fiancée. She's also her best friend. That day she went to taste some fish skewers, sweet potatoes and fried lobster at the Kyoto market.

4)  Quite a common scene in Sylvie's life. She's very greedy when it comes to ice creams. Here, whilst waiting for the plane that would take us to Hiroshima, she headed to the airport icre cream shop to tast her favourite ice cream, a Banana Split!

5, 6)   That was the historic moment. It was Sylvie's Tokyo singing tour and for the first time she performed her latest song "l'heure la plus douce de ma vie". After the show she asked me what I thought of the song. It was outstanding of course. At another event that i attended, when Sylvie sang it for the second time in Osaka fans leaped onto the stage just after her song "Deux mains". That rarely happens in Japan, and Sylvie herself was very surprised.

7)  This was Sylvie leaving for the first trip in Japan. That evening she sang at the Kaikan Hall in Kyoto.

8)  Recording a television show.

9) Try to work out where Sylvie is in this phot. By a lake? in a park? Nowhere near. This photo was taken in the 'Fish' aisle of a big store in Kyoto. It's a man made decoration!

10)  Relaxation for everyone. We hired a bus and took a little excursion around Hiroshima. Sylvie invited me to sit at her side. Spotting Tony and realising he was getting ready to take a photo, she made the peace sign. A gesture that means a lot in Hiroshima.
